Madonna's philanthropy manager: "There's no controversy at Malawian School..."

American pop queen Madonna is in Malawi to inspect the schools she has built in the impoverished African country, the native home of her adopted two children, her manager said on Tuesday. "We are coming to visit the 10 schools that she recently finished building with an organisation called BuildOn," said Madonna's philanthropy manager Trevor Nielson. "Those schools which are now open and operating are serving 3,800 students," he told AFP. The schools were built over the past nine months.

Education minister Eunice Kazembe had last year challenged a claim by her charity Raising Malawi that it built 10 schools, saying they were rather classroom blocks, and not schools. But Nielson said the structures were schools complying with national standards. "There's no controversy, the schools are built to the exact national standards of Malawi, like every other Malawian school," he said. "The bottom line is that 3,800 children are going to school now who were not going to school before."

Initially she wanted to build a large $15-million girls academy, but the plan was abandoned after "a large amount of money went missing". The academy was replaced by plans to build schools, in order to reach more children.

Madonna, said to be the single largest international philanthropic donor to Malawi, also supports childcare in the country which is home to nearly a million children orphaned by AIDS. On Sunday she visited one of the orphanages she sponsors in the capital Lilongwe.

Madonna-Influenced Episode to The Carrie Diaries: “A First Time for Everything”

“The Carrie Diaries” continues its Season 1 run tonight on The CW, with a Madonna-themed episode. Tonight’s it's a final episode, “A First Time for Everything” airs at 8/7c on The CW...

Although there are no appearances from the Material Girl, the episode is set around AnnaSophia Robb’s Carrie Bradshaw and Austin Butler’s Sebastian Kydd as the high school couple heads to New York City for a tour party for the 1980s pop queen – and, maybe more.

Amy B.Harris (Director) talks about to Madonna's Inspiration at the press conference...

Why Madonna?

"Thinking of the ‘Gods’ of the mid-80s, it made sense to use Madonna who was launching her infamous tour at the same time. “Madonna was the ultimate then,” Harris said. “And I believe Larissa would have known her well and been a part of that circle so it felt really organic…and then we got to use a lot of her music, which was awesome.”

(...) “For me it’s always been really fun when we can find the current events that were happening around that time to sort of open up the idea."

“In [Episode] 10, it was the ‘Less Than Zero’ party. We talked about how writers were kind of gods during that time and then when we started talking about well what were the other gods at that time – Madonna,” she continued of how “The Carrie Diaries” settled on tonight’s Madonna influences. “And then we were like, what was she doing at the time and she was launching her ‘Like A Virgin Tour.’ When we saw that we were like, ‘Oh! We know where that story’s going because it sort of dovetails right into [Carrie].”
